“The Wendy Effect” is the story about a woman named Jean and a dog named Wendy, who inspired Jean to lead the change in Ohio’s pit bull law.
I first met Jean very early on in my own advocacy of dogs. It was about a year and a half after I began my first documentary film, “Guilty Til Proven Innocent“, which Jean’s story was featured.
The first time I interviewed Jean was on June 5, 2010 in Toledo, Ohio, for the city’s annual parade. This would be the first parade “pit bull” dogs would be allowed to walk in since the late 1980s when former county dog warden, Tom Skeldon, ran the Lucas County Dog Warden’s Office.
I used parts of that interview for her Petumentary, because at the time in her lap was a six month old Wendy…before she officially adopted her. Reliving Jean just gush about her on camera melted my heart, and seeing the start of something that became special was equally special to observe.
