Late last week, we were asked to create a short 2-3 minute video to help promote a wonderful dog named Simon, who is a nominee for the 2021 American Humane Hero Dog Award in the “Shelter Dog” category.
Simon is best known for his unique distinct black markings above his eyes that resemble eyebrows, but he also took part in dock diving competitions with his human, Stephanie Williams. Stephanie shares her home with four dogs total – one of whom, Lili (aka Lil), is mentioned halfway through this video.
I became Facebook friends with Stephanie in December 2019, during the final year of my soulmate dog, Preston’s, life. We soon became real friends after he passed on March 16, 2020, and was my first supporter when I began working on a doc-series – Once In A Lifetime, about Preston and his influence to my life and work in advocacy.
A couple months after Preston passed, one of my girls, Era, was diagnosed with cancer, and then started chemotherapy around the time Stephanie’s dog, Lili, was also diagnosed with cancer.
When I make these videos for customers, I like to send a rough cut of the video, to ensure I am heading down the right track of what they are wanting. Tuesday evening (4/6/2021), I sent Stephanie the work-in-progress version, and we talked on the phone where she informed me of Lili’s declining health. Sadly, the following day, Stephanie had to say goodbye, on the same day I put the final touches on her video, where she talked about Simon’s importance in keeping her spirits up with his comedic antics while caring for Lili through her end of life.
We send our condolences to Stephanie and the rest of the Williams family, and hope to see Simon declared winner of the 2021 Hero Dog Award.
